Veil of Pearls

Title: Veil of Pearls
Author: MaryLu Tyndall
Publisher: Barbour Books

Be swept away to Charleston of 1811, a city bustling with immigrants like Adalia, who is a runaway slave so light-skinned that no one guesses her past. Terrified her secret will be discovered, she settles into a quiet life making herbal remedies for a local doctor. But when Morgan, the handsome son of a prominent family, sweeps her into his glamorous world—a world in which the truth about Adalia’s heritage would ruin them both—suspicions and petty jealousies are aroused. What will Morgan do when he discovers that the woman he has fallen in love with is a runaway slave?

I've read all of MaryLu Tyndall's books and find that she consistently maintains excellent story quality; her characters have depth and richness, written with a special sensitivity to their plights. And if you want to have that "swept away" sense of adventure, these are the books for you. As a retired school teacher I've recommended her books to friends, family and students for an uplifting read--even learned something about early American history and the sea-faring life in the process! I'd love to see these books in high school libraries as well. I can't wait for her soon-to-be released "Veil Of Pearls"; another beautiful story of inspiration and encouragement we've come to expect from MaryLu Tyndall.

As a retired school teacher I've recommended her books to friends, family and students for an uplifting read. I'd love to see these books in high school libraries as well.

After I wrote this as part of a review for MaryLu's "Surrender the Dawn" on the Barnes and Noble site, I asked myself why did I put that in? Will people get the impression that her books are not "adult" enough if I'd like to see them added to high school libraries? Would people get the wrong impression and think MaryLu wrote YA (young adult) fiction? Believe it or not, I agonized over that comment; but God had other plans, and something else soon happened which makes me appreciate His timing even more....

Soon after I'd made the comments above, I'd read where the publishing industry released another book.... a certain "adult" novel, and a new descriptive came out along with the genre: "mommy-porn".  I won't dwell on the title or the author except to say that in an interview recently she stated that she's tried not to let too many things change in her life: She's still doing laundry,...and there are at least two people by her side who have not read her books — her sons. "Good G--," she says, "I would be mortified."

There will be a lot of adult women out there saying "But--but-- I have the RIGHT to read what I want!" My mother used to call it the I-I-ME-ME-I syndrome. Self-centered, pleasure-seeking, hang-the-consequences type of thinking from people who want to do what they please because they work hard, deserve it, and after all they're adults, darn it! And since its legal, it must be all right.

But as adults, aren't we supposed to consider our responsibilities first....?

Because--

YOU CAN BET THESE BOOKS WILL END UP IN THE HANDS OF YOUNG PEOPLE WHETHER YOU WANT THEM TO OR NOT.

So, MaryLu, you not only write great stories....but you write GOOD stories. For adults. (We'll just pray they end up in the hands of young people too).

"Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? (12)Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? (13) If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” (Luke 11:12)

  2. I am thankful to see the concern about what the young may be exposed to because of their mother's choice of reading materials. I am saddened to know that some mothers and even grandmothers will be so careless in exposing their own minds and their children's and grandchildren's minds to some of what is popular in our present culture.

This should be good reason to promote church libraries and the good Christian fiction such as that written by MaryLu. For many years of homeschooling, we made thorough use of the county library system. But now as standards are so relaxed I think I would find a good church library and stick to that.

Thank you for the opportunity to win the book and the beautiful doll. And thank you for your thoughtful post.

    Blessings, Janice jsmithg(at)hotmail(dot)com

  4. I know people who read these "mommy-porn" books and I can't understand it. I know we shouldn't judge people, everyone needs to do what they think is right for themselves, but I just don't understand it.

I so appreciate authors like MaryLu who write clean, Godly romance that I can truly enjoy. I can't wait to read Veil of Pearls, I've heard so many good things about it!

  5. Mary Lu is an awesome writer and a wonderful encourager. I'm looking forward to reading Veil of Pearls. I'd recommend you all take a look at Steve Laube's post from last week. http://stevelaube.com/a-little-less-shade-a-little-more-light/

Steve says, "Christian novelists? You were born for such a time as this." I agree. Let's keep writing.

  6. The book looks like an exciting and adventurous read. Talk about conflict.

And I agree with the consensus. No good reason to read or promote porn, mommy or daddy. No wonder our nation is in such a mess.

  8. Carrie--Thanks for bring my first guest today!

And thank you Janice, Melissa, Liz and Jillian for your comments. I truly didn't want my post to sound judgmental (that's why I left out the name of the secular author & book title in question) Just wanted to give folks a heads-up that we as adults need to be more responsible for what we bring into our homes and what we expose our children to. Thanks for stopping in ladies! Blessings!

  11. Pat,
I couldn't agree with you more. In fact I am sad to say that my oldest daughter asked me about said book and I told her that I thought it was not appropriate for her to be reading. Now mind you she is 25, married, with 2 young daughters. However, there has been much discussion about them both good and bad and she wanted to find out for herself. I have taught all of my girls that if they can do anything with Christ right beside them then they are fine, if they cannot then they should not be doing it. I have been praying for her, and I believe He will let her know she should not be reading this "garbage."
We also need to be concerned about our witness. What others will think about what we are doing, because we may be the only Jesus they see.
    Thanks for the post Pat!
    God Bless! ~ Andi

  13. I agree with those who have posted. If my daughter can't read my books (she's 13) then I shouldn't write them. Even though they're aimed at adults, I strive, in all things, to bring honor and glory to God.

Thank you Pat and MaryLu for wonderful words to encourage us in our daily walk.

  14. Sorry to be so late to the party, but this author has serious jet-lag! (Note to self: Traveling to foreign country when one is over 50 will take much longer to recover than when one is 20!) Anyway, Thank you so much, Pat, for having me on your blog and for your kind words! And for giving away such cool stuff!!! I couldn't agree more with you and with everyone else about writing good clean wholesome stories that glorify God. As the book stores fill up with filth, we need more of them! I make a point of never putting anything in my books that I wouldn't want God or my kids to read. :-)
Thank you all for your comments and your interest in my books!!

  24. This is yet another one of the new books out that has truly breathtaking cover art! The trailer pulls you in, makes you excited to be a reader all over again. (And might I add that I also had to watch The Last of the Mohicans clip as well? That was one of my all-time favorite movies growing up!)

Keep the fabulous books coming, MaryLu! ; )

  25. I really want to read this book. Can't wait until my reading fast is over. It's good that there are books out there that broach harder subjects like veil of pearls while promoting Godly views. One thing that makes me so mad about those "unname books"is how degrading they are to women especially young women and how they promote a view of love and sex God never intended. I talk to abused batter woman almost every day in my job, and it makes cringe when such a life style is promoted.

  26. I couldn't agree more about the book! It was quite a fantastic read. And MaryLu does reach a young audience; I'm only 23, and have been reading her books since the Legacy of the King's Pirates came out in 2007. :)

  27. Thanks ladies! Kristy, The Last of the Mohicans is one of my favorite movies too! In fact, I read the book when I was a teenager.. Josie, I couldn't agree more about some books these days.. women don't realize how degrading they are to women.. when they show women giving themselves to men so cheaply and without commitment.. it's horrible, but our culture is that way now. :-( Waving at Karen!! My faithful crew member! Although women of all ages read my books, I do feel a leaning toward helping the younger generation.. they are facing many more challenges then I ever did.

  28. Thanks so much for stopping in today, Kristy, Josie and Karen...and I hope you're feeling better, MaryLu!

I remember when I first brought MaryLu's books into the homeschool group; they were so unsure when I told them they were "romances" because they connected them with the old secular "bodice-ripper" type stories (what a demeaning name)and leaned toward non-fiction & classics. Then they found out they were Christian novels and now they request I bring in more every time we have classes at the church. It's opened up a whole new world for them! And their not afraid to let their kids be exposed to them.

I remember the first book of MaryLu's I read (The Blue Enchantress) and thought Wow! What an internal conflict and how MaryLu handled it with such grace!

Another problem with the "other" story mentioned in my post is the "out-on-the-fringe"-type physical intimacy the story is based on; it goes beyond normal....and that's certainly not healthy!

If I had MaryLu's books when I was a young woman--I'm sure my own and many others' relationships would have been far different! THANK YOU--and once again, God bless you, MaryLu! And, thanks again, Ladies!

  29. I haven't been able to read your books, but I want to read them. I saw the books and tried to get them at the local library, but unfortunately they didn't have any. I love Christian historical romance. It's one of my favorite genres. I would love to get one of your books, though. They looks like they're wonderful books!

  31. Mary Lu Tyndall is the most awesome author ever. She knows how to write a story that grips you from page one all the way throughout the book. The way she laces history throughout the book is so neat because she also adds full life experiences that are hard hitting in our society. As a foster parent I know there are a lot of hurting people out there and Mary Lu gently touches so many of those hurts. Great job Mary Lu, can't WAIT TO READ THE NEW BOOK!

  35. You are marvelous ladies....thanks for all your comments!

And Peggy, I think words like "awesome" and "gripping" for MaryLu's books are absolutely right on! It's been many a night that I've stayed up reading her books into the wee hours...(try dawn!:) I can readily say that I can get completely involved with your stories MaryLu, and take them to restaurants or wherever I think I'm going to get a break to read.

I also have another witness: In 2010 I had serious surgery done; (had to go to another state for it) and I took two things: my Bible, and a dear friend's encouragement in the form of a story she wrote-- The Redemption. (Praise God for you MaryLu!) The Lord knew it would add to the strength and courage I needed at such a time. So grateful....for those of you who haven't read her books yet--you will find the power of the Holy Spirit blessing them!

Thank you all so much for stopping in this week....will also add you for the drawing, Peggy, Stargazer, Ladette & Ingrid! And another huge thank you new Followers!

BIG REMINDER: DON'T FORGET TO LEAVE YOUR E-MAIL IN CASE I NEED TO CONTACT YOU!

  38. Happy Friday, Ladies. I'm in awe of this discussion and I give all the glory to God for anything good in my books. I had NO writing experience before I got published.. took no classes.. nada.. but simply answered His call to write a story about a Christian pirate. It's been quite the adventure since. I truly wish all of you could win because I think Veil of Pearls has a timeless message for everyone. Plus the love story is pretty cool too! Hugs to you all!

  39. One of the weeks before Christmas several years ago I was pretty sick and couldn't go out of the house. Needless to say I got bored, so I got some books from the library: the first two books in Mary Lu's The Legacy of the King's Pirates series. Ever since then I've read all her books ( more than once :) ) and of course can't wait to read Veil of Pearls. It's so hard to find historical Christian fiction in these time periods and the sweet romance and incredible faith Mary Lu laces through her pages is so amazing and always makes me sigh with happiness when I finish the last page. The faith exhibited in her characters is a terrific example for real life. I adore dolls, and have a small collection of them in my room, so that along with her latest book is an amazing offer, but Mary Lu if you read this I also just wanted to let you know how your writing has been really inspirational to me :) And also, when I first read your books and fell in love with them I was around 15, so yes your amazing GOoD books have reached young people's hands too :)
